Fuel Pumps

By Lisa Monroe

A fuel pump is a type of equipment that is part of an engine in order for the fuel to get where it needs to go. For many older vehicles this is commonly a type of item that goes out from years of use. It can be hard on a fuel pump if you continually operate your vehicle with very little gas in it.

You are better off to keep at least a half of a tank of fuel in it at all times. Yet many college students struggle just to put a few bucks in at a time. Then there are those individuals that find it to be a waste of time if they get fuel before they are almost completely out of it.

Some people also find that their fuel pump doesn’t work like it should during the warmer months of the year. This is commonly referred to as vapor locking. The fuel pump doesn’t work like it should when it is really hot out so the vehicle stalls out. Some people think there is something really wrong with their vehicle. Yet when they return and the temperature has dropped it starts up for them just fine. This can be frustrating and dangerous too because you just never know when the fuel pump is going to act up.

It isn’t very hard to replace a fuel pump and it can be done in just a couple of hours with some basic tools. You will likely have to order one from a part store or online though. There are several different types of fuel pumps and too many for part stores to carry enough of them for all of the different makes and models of vehicles out there.

Older vehicles will feature a mechanical fuel pump and they are less expensive and easier to replace. Newer vehicles feature electric fuel pumps with can cost twice as much as a mechanical one. Many people prefer to have an electric fuel pump put in by an authorized mechanic. This can cost you hundreds of dollars more though for the labor so do it on your own if you can.
